Shankar Panicker

Shankar Panicker, popularly known as Shankar (born in 1960) is an actor, producer and director in the Malayalam & Tamil movie industry. He is well known as Shankar in Malayalam films and oruthalairagam Shankar in Tamil films. With early 1980s, three Malayalam heroes marked their screen debut – Mohanlal, Shankar and Mammootty, and Shankar was way ahead of others during the first half of 1980s. In the early eighties, he was the most prominent romantic superstar of Malayalam cinema. In the special edition of 100 years of Indian cinema, Galatta Cinema magazine gave him the title “True romantic hero of Mollywood”.
Shankar’s debut film was Oru Thalai Ragam in Tamil which ran for over 365 days in theaters. His Malayalam debut Manjil Virinja Pookkal ran over 200 days in theatres and is one of the all time blockbuster hit romantic films of the Malayalam film industry. The success of Manjil Virinja Pookal made Shankar the leading young star of Malayalam films. He never experimented with his roles and had a very large fan base in Kerala. Most of his ordinary films were hits just because of his presence.
Some of his hit movies are Ente Mohangal Poovaninju, Padayottam, Sandhyakku Virinja Poovu, Aaraantae mulla kochu mulla, Poochakkoru Mookkuthi, Itha Innu Muthal, Aram + Aram = Kinnaram, Vannu Kandu Keezhadakki, etc.. His performance in Parayaanumvayya Parayaathirikkaanumvayya gained him an action hero image. He wored the cap of a producer in Chekkaeran Oru Chilla.
Shankar’s other major films include Sughamo Devi, Naalae Njangaludae Vivaaham & Oppam Oppathinoppam. He also did anti-hero roles in Kizhakkunarum Pakshi & Abhimanyu. He also did guest roles in Maanathae Kottaram, Gandharvam & Guru.
His recent movies include Ividam Swargamanu, Fathers Day, Naku Penda Naku Taka, Bhoomiyudae Avakashikal, Hotel California, etc..
He also did roles in Television serials like Swararaagam, Parasparam, etc.. He won 2006 Film Critics Television Best Actor Award for his performance in Chithrashalabham.
Shankar directed a video film Kaatti in 2006 based on child labor which won him the best director award from Malayalam Television viewers DRISHYA awards for video film. He made his feature film debut with Virus, urging society not to shun HIV/AIDS affected people.
His first commercial Malayalam directorial venture was Keralotsavam 2009. In 2015, he released a Tamil-Malayalam bi-lingual- Sand City in Malayalam & Manal Nagaram in Tamil.
